The only Lighting Guide you will ever need!
Before I start with the whole introduction, I want to tell you that lighting, in general, used to terrify me. In my opinion, it is the most important element in the room and the HARDEST ONE. It can either make or break a room. We have million light types, not to mention the billion designs and the different bulbs that can be placed in the fixtures. I AM TELLING YOU IT IS INSANE!
Now, don’t worry you don’t have to
worry about it anymore. This blog post will be the only lighting guide you will
ever need. I did all my research and combined all my design experience to write
this blog for you. ( I honestly struggled to find a lighting guide that would
be useful for everyone not only designers and that is why I created my own.)
SO, I know we all have this in our apartment somewhere.
(At least we do )
I promise at the end of this blog post you will be able to differentiate the different light fixtures and you will know how and where they are used and placed.
First, we need to understand the
different types of light fixtures:
2. Flush Mounted Ceiling Fixture 3. Semi- Flushed Mounted Ceiling Fixture 4. Pendant 5. Recessed pot-lights 6. Wall Mounted 7. Desk-Side Lamp 8. Accent Accessory Light 9. Floor Lamp |
1. Kitchen: Before you start, you need to know that the light in the kitchen is crucial. Every kitchen is special and is used differently. Some kitchens are used as” semi-working from home office space”. Others are being used also as dining spaces. That is why you really need to understand all your kitchen functions and then choose accordingly your lighting.
- Light Bulb Color: Cool White
(To know more why this bulb choice you need to check my last Instagram post: post )
- Accent “led strip” lighting under upper cabinets
- Ceiling Fixture- Number of Lumens: (Length of room x Width of room) x 50 lumens= Number of Lumens needed for the Light Fixture
If you have an open kitchen with an island- Light fixture type needed:
- Recessed pot-lights
- Pendants above the island or linear light fixture
- Accent “led strip” lighting under upper cabinets
- Placement of linear light:
- Placement of pendant lights:
Trick to choose the right pendant shape: If the island is used as a workspace your pendant light should point down- and if the island is used as a gathering space your light should point upward (candle style).

2. Dining:
This is the only place we usually
care about lighting fixtures especially in Lebanon. We often do it right by
choosing a chandelier but we go wrong with its dimensions and placement.
- Light Type needed:
- Chandelier
- Accent lights of console table
- Light Bulb Color: Soft White (To know more why this bulb choice you need to check my last Instagram post: post )
- Ceiling Fixture number of Lumen: (Length of room x Width of room) x 30 lumens= Number of Lumens needed for the Light Fixture
- Placement of light above the round table:
- Placement of light above the rectangular table:
- 3. Living room: LAYER YOUR LIGHTS! If you have only a ceiling lighting fixture you are doing it all WRONG. To create an interesting, homey, living, and relaxing space you need to have different types of lights in the room.
- Light Type needed:
If Low Ceilings:
- Flush Mounted Ceiling Fixture - Or Semi-Flushed mounted
- Floor Lamps
- Task-Desk lamps
- Accent Light
If High Ceilings:
- Chandelier
- Floor Lamps
- Task-Desk lamps
- Accent Light
- Light Bulb Color: Soft White (To know more why this bulb choice you need to check my last Instagram post: post )
- Ceiling Fixture number of Lumen: (Length of room x Width of room) x 30 lumens= Number of Lumens needed for the Light Fixture
- Placement of light:
- 4. Entry and hallways: This is either done right or wrong there is no place in between. The light in these spaces either creates an amazing vibe or a very dark useless scary space (that you usually can’t stand in them for a whole minute.)
- Light Type needed:
If Narrow Hallway with low ceilings:
- Flush or Semi-Flushed Ceiling
Fixtures
If Narrow with High Ceilings:
- Pendant Lights
If Wide Hallway consider having wall-mounted
fixtures
- Light Bulb Color: Soft White (To know more why this bulb choice you need to check my last Instagram post: post )
- Ceiling Fixture number of Lumen: (Length of room x Width of room) x 20 lumens= Number of Lumens needed for the Light Fixture
- Placement of pendant light:
- 5. Bathroom: When it comes to proper lighting, one of the most critical rooms in the home is the bathroom. It’s most often the first place people go to when they wake up in the morning, and it can set the mood for the day. Let me confess I had no clue that you should not place a wall lighting fixture above the mirror. The best possible lighting for activities in front of the bathroom mirror comes from fixtures mounted on either side roughly at the user’s eye level. This leaves no part of the face in shadow, as happens with an overhead fixture.
- Light Type needed:
- Two wall-mounted fixtures or Pendant
Lights
- Light Bulb Color: Cool White (To know more why this bulb choice you need to check my last Instagram post: post )
- Placement of light:
- 6. Bedroom: No introductions needed, we all know how important light in the bedroom is. Especially if we read or work in our bedroom sometimes.
- Light Type needed:
- Chandelier
- Two pendants lights or Side Lamps or
Wall mounted Fixtures on Every side of the bed
- Floor Lamp (If you have Empty
corners or a Chair)
- Accent Lamps
- Light Bulb Color: Soft White (To know more why this bulb choice you need to check my last Instagram post: post )
- Ceiling Fixture number of Lumen: (Length of room x Width of room) x 30 lumens= Number of Lumens needed for the Light Fixture
- Placement of light:
Final tips:
- Always remember to layer your lights. Check that you have more than one light source in your room.
- I know some people struggle if they have an open plan, so this is a simple example of how you can mix and match your light fixtures in an open space.
Good work.
